Nigerian Health Workers Issue COVID-19 Cards Without Vaccination – Report
Health workers at some vaccination centers in Nigeria have compromised professional standards by issuing COVID-19 vaccination cards without administering vaccine doses.
A report by the Media Advocacy West Africa Foundation (MAWA-Foundation) found that health workers in Plateau, Ebonyi, Gombe and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) collected bribes ranging from 2,000 to 40,000 naira to issue vaccination cards to Nigerians wary of the vaccine.
After collecting the bribes, the health workers uploaded the relevant data of the individuals to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) platform and sent SMS to confirm the vaccination .
According to the report, some officials at Kuru II Primary Health Center (PHC) in Kushe, Plateau State collected 25,000 Naira for two vaccination cards while some health workers at a PHC in Rayfield, Jos, demanded 40,000 naira for a card. .
Some health workers from Amagu PHC in Ezza South, Ebonyi State collected N3,000 per card, while those from Pobawure PHC in Billiri, Gombe State collected N10,000.
At a vaccination center in Gwagwa, FCT, health workers distributed cards without vaccines at a cost of N5,000 per card.
The report notes that the practice has continued despite threats from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to prosecute and fire the health workers involved.

NPHCDA executive director Faisal Shuaib told a press briefing last year that security and anti-corruption officers were working with the agency on the issue.
“There is no tolerance for this kind of activity. DSS and CIPC are involved. Once these people involved in this vaccination racket are brought to justice, then, of course, civil service rules will be followed and this will lead to the potential suspension and dismissal of these health workers,” he said. he declares.
Federation government secretary Boss Mustapha also said vaccination certificates issued in the country would be checked.
The SGF has warned that anyone found in possession of fake cards will face prosecution.
“Let me assure everyone that vaccination records/certificates will be checked and this should serve as a warning to criminally minded people to refrain as they will be prosecuted accordingly,” he said. .
