Legarda hails bicam’s endorsement of health worker benefits amid COVID-19 crisis
MANILA, Philippines — Senatorial candidate Loren Legarda has welcomed bicameral approval of bills to provide benefits to healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Legarda said the House’s approval of the reconciled version of Senate Bill 2421 and House Bill 10701 will benefit public and private healthcare workers, even in future emergencies. .
“Our healthcare professionals, health workers and frontline staff are our warriors. They care for patients with COVID-19 and are at the greatest risk of being exposed to the virus,” Legarda said in a statement.
“We should give them all the protection they need because they are making huge sacrifices for us.”
Under the bill, frontline medical workers will receive a monthly medical emergency allowance ranging from 3,000 to 9,000 pesos, depending on their “risk exposure category”.
“This is the first step in ensuring our healthcare system is able to meet the challenges of this global pandemic,” Legarda said.
Legarda, Deputy Speaker of the House, co-authored Republic Act 11494, or the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, which provided a special hazard allowance for healthcare workers exposed to the virus.
She also filed Bill 10621 to institutionalize the granting of these medical and other benefits to frontliners.
