Health professionals call on Florida lawmakers to reject governor’s request to ban manda vaccine
Doctors and other medical professionals on Monday appealed to Florida lawmakers to reject any ban on COVID-19 masks and vaccines. New legislation is coming even as Florida has recorded more than 60,000 deaths from COVID-19.
The legislature has called a special session at the request of Governor Ron DeSantis – to draft laws to ban such terms.
“We are deeply concerned that he is using this week’s session as a platform to raise his political profile by promoting policies that his grassroots can appreciate, but which we as doctors can say without a doubt. “They’ll put people at risk,” said Miami cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby, Florida official for the Committee to Protect Healthcare, who hosted the media event via Zoom.
“Governor DeSantis’ COVID-19 response has resulted and will continue to cause unnecessary and preventable suffering and death, âsaid Dr. Fred Southwick, infectious disease specialist in Gainesville who blamed disinformation and politics on the 16,000 deaths that occurred during the outbreak last summer. of the Delta variant. âThe coronavirus does not differentiate between a Republican and a Democrat. ”
“Governor DeSantis’ special legislative session will not help schools and businesses stay open safely, âsaid Dr. Jennifer Cowart, an internist in Jacksonville, who said she wanted more focus at the state level on vaccinations. “In fact, by allowing COVID-19 to continue to spread in schools, you will likely do the opposite and expose more children and all Floridians to disease and suffering.”
Prior to the opening of the special session, several other national health organizations – the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the American Lung Association, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – also issued a statement calling on the Florida legislature to reject any proposal that would thwart vaccination mandates. .
