Eritrea: Substantial investment for the construction of health facilities

Mendefera, 19th May 2021 – The Southern Region branch of the Ministry of Health has reported that over the past 30 years of independence, more than 193 million Nakfa has been invested in setting up health facilities. health as well as for the introduction of modern medical equipment.

Stating that before independence there were 2 hospitals, 3 health centers and 22 health posts providing limited health services to the public, Dr Amanuel Mihreteab, head of the regional branch, said that currently there are 7 hospitals, 9 health centers, 42 health posts and 2 maternity and child clinics providing commendable health service to the public.

Regarding human resources, Dr. Amanuel indicated that the number of health professionals has increased by 500%, health practitioners by 330%, nurses by 237%, caregivers by 330%, laboratory technicians 1125%, Pharmacists 700%, X-Ray Technicians 525%, Public Health Professionals 478% and Dentists 1450%.

Dr. Amanuel went on to say that apart from providing health services, the health facilities in the region have contributed significantly to raising public awareness of health issues and reducing the prevalence of communicable diseases.

The Mendefera Fistula Treatment Center also provides a commendable service to fistula patients from all over the country.

Health facilities also provide commendable pre and post natal care and the number of pregnant women giving birth in health facilities has increased by 317%, Dr Amanuel added.

Regarding the control of diseases which have been the main causes of death and disability, Dr. Amanuel indicated that more than 1.5 million impregnated mosquito nets have been distributed to the public and that vaccination programs, in particular of mothers and children, were carried out against various diseases.
